The House of Representatives passed an unprecedented wiretapping bill that grants sweeping new spying powers to the President and leaves little court oversight to protect privacy rights. This bill, if passed by the Senate and signed by the President, will have very serious implications for civil liberties, privacy, and our system of checks and balances. As part of the NYCLU continuing Civil Liberties Discussion Series, Danielle Tully of the ACLU’s National Security Project will discuss the civil liberties issues at play and the ACLU and NYCLU’s objections to the President’s wiretapping plan.
