Thinking about law school?
LAWbound will help you get on the right path
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 8, 2008

Latino and Latina college undergrads interested in law have the unique opportunity to get mentoring and training from the nation's top legal professionals in New York City. The Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund (PRLDEF)'s 2008 LAWbound ® summer academy gives college freshmen and sophomores the chance to talk to Latino attorneys at some of the country's leading civil rights organizations and law firms, and to discuss legal issues with Latino judges in their chambers.
LAWbound's academic program gives students the tools they need to get on the right path to law school. Professors, guest speakers and professionals explain legal methods and processes, and possible career paths for law school graduates. Several field trips throughout the week-long course allow students to step into Manhattan's legal world and visit city courtrooms, law offices, and private firms. The program also provides academic counseling and mentoring, and allows students to establish relationships and ask questions in informal, relaxed, and social settings
With the support of the Minority Affairs Committee of the Law School Admission Council, LAWbound's goal is to increase the number of Latinos who go to law school. "While the Latino population in the United States is at its highest, educational statistics show that Latino representation in law school has either stagnated or declined," Sonji Patrick, Director of PRLDEF Education Programming said. "LAWbound allows PRLDEF to continue to fulfill our mission to diversify the legal profession by identifying and nurturing younger students so that they will become viable candidates for law school admission."
PRLDEF invites Latino and Latina college students who will be sophomores or juniors in the fall and are interested in pursuing legal careers to apply for PRLDEF's 2008 LAWbound® summer academy.
Interested students should visit PRLDEF's website (www.PRLDEF.org) to download application forms and find out more information about the LAWbound summer prep program. Or, contact Sonji Patrick, Director of Education Programs at (212) 739-7497.
